My responsibility as an educator is to give every student the ability to access information they need to learn. I find that my educational philosophy is grounded in Universal Design for Learning. I need to provide information in different ways and give students the tools they need to learn. They all need to have the same understanding even if it is achieved in different ways. I am inspired by Ross Todd’s quote, “The hallmark of a school library in the 21st century is…that it makes a real difference to student learning, that it contributes in tangible and significant ways to the development of meaning making and constructing knowledge” (xii). I believe my library and my role as a librarian is to teach students the skills they need and introduce them to the tools they will use to learn. As a librarian, I need to serve as a leader in creating learning that connects to student needs (xviii). I truly believe in Wiggins and McTighe’s Learning Principle number ten that states: All learners are capable of excellent work if the right conditions for learning are established (3). The library is the place where students will learn the 21st century skills that are essential to success in their education and in the workplace and as a librarian, it is my duty to teach them these skills.
